Een van de meest dramatische delen van de Peaks of the Balkans Trail, waar deze lange en lonende wandeling vandaan komt Montenegro Albanië binnen via het wilde hart van de Vervloekte Bergen. Omringd door torenhoge kalksteentoppen en een ongerept berglandschap, biedt het een onvergetelijke bergervaring. De reis begint in het dorp Vusanje, in westelijke richting naar de indrukwekkende Ropojane-vallei. Het pad volgt ongeveer 4,5 km een ​​bospad door de brede vallei voordat het een kruispunt bereikt waar de route linksaf buigt richting Buni i Jezerces.

Een gestage klim langs een 4WD-parcours leidt naar Katun Zastan (Zastan Karaula), waar nog steeds de overblijfselen staan van een voormalige Joegoslavische militaire kazerne – stille getuigen van de ooit zwaarbewaakte grens tussen Albanië en Joegoslavië. Vanaf Zastan Karaula klimt het gemarkeerde pad in zuidwestelijke richting door dicht beukenbos.
Na ongeveer 2,2 km komt de route boven de boomgrens uit, slechts een paar honderd meter voor de grens tussen Montenegro en Albanië. Plots verschijnen de prachtige Buni i Jezerces-meren onder de torenhoge kliffen van het Jezerca-massief: een adembenemend bergpanorama. Deze ongerepte gletsjermeren worden gevoed door ondergrondse bronnen die zijn gevormd door smeltende sneeuw die langs de omliggende kalksteentoppen naar beneden stroomt. Tijdens het smeltseizoen van de sneeuw kunnen er wel vier meren zichtbaar zijn, hoewel sommige geleidelijk uitdrogen onder de zomerzon.

wateren, sterrenhemels en volledige rust in een van de meest spectaculaire berglandschappen van de Balkan.

One of the most spectacular sections of the Peaks of the Balkans Trail, this panoramic stage offers breathtaking views and an unforgettable ridge-top experience along the border of Montenegro and Albania, offering different options such as walking the classic loop ending in the same country Grebaje Montenegro or crossing the border right from the ridge to Lepushë Albania. The trail begins in the stunning Grebaje Valley, a popular mountain destination surrounded by dramatic limestone peaks. From here, the path heads northwest through peaceful birch and beech forests on the Montenegrin side.
After approximately 2.6 km, you rise above the tree line and continue southwest toward the ridge. As you approach the summit zone, the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic—vast alpine landscapes unfold in every direction.

Standing proudly opposite one another, these two peaks offer a truly unique hiking experience. The trail literally follows the borderline between Montenegro and Albania—once heavily guarded during the Communist era—now open to hikers seeking freedom, adventure, and 360° panoramic views. From Maja Vajushës/Talijanka, the trail descends east toward the col and gently returns to forest terrain, forming a scenic “lollipop” loop that combines ridge walking with woodland tranquillity.
After your hike, unwind in Grebaje Valley’s welcoming guesthouses, chalets, restaurants, and cafés. Enjoy a refreshing drink while taking in the surrounding peaks—an ideal way to end an unforgettable mountain day.
