Het ligt op ongeveer 900 meter hoogte bij de ingang van de vallei van de Ropojana-rivier, waar de valleibodem de eerste steile wanden van de Montenegrijnse Alpen ontmoet. De omliggende toppen stijgen tot boven de 2.500 meter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Het dorp heeft een paar honderd inwoners, voornamelijk Albaneessprekend en moslim. Het ligt ongeveer 10 km van de stad Gusinje en ongeveer 20 km van Plav \u2013 de dichtstbijzijnde stad van welke omvang dan ook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De naam bestaat in twee vormen. Vuthaj is de Albanese naam, afgeleid van het Albanees <em>vush\u00eb<\/em> (meisje) gecombineerd met het achtervoegsel van de plaatsnaam <em>-aj<\/em> \u2013 grofweg \u201cplaats van het meisje\u201d. Vusanje (\u0412\u0443\u0441\u0430\u045a\u0435) is de offici\u00eble Montenegrijnse en Servische administratieve naam. Beide verwijzen naar precies dezelfde nederzetting. Het is in de meeste routes geen volledige etappebestemming - meer typisch een tussenpunt waar doorheen wordt gegaan, of een basis van waaruit wandelaars de volgende ochtend de Ropojana-vallei bereiken. Voor degenen die liever de etappe eerder afbreken dan in \u00e9\u00e9n dag helemaal naar Gusinje te gaan, zijn de pensions in Vuthaj de plek om te stoppen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Afstand vanaf Babino Polje:<\/strong> ongeveer 8-10 km onderweg<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Afstand tot Gusinje:<\/strong> ongeveer 6-8 km<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Afstand tot Plav:<\/strong> ongeveer 20 km over de weg<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-getting-to-vuthaj-from-babino-polje\">Vanuit Babino Polje naar Vuthaj reizen<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Vanuit Babino Polje dalen wandelaars via een goed bewegwijzerde route af door de Montenegrijnse hooglanden richting de Ropojana-vallei. Er is geen commercieel centrum, geen restaurantstrook, geen toeristische infrastructuur in welke conventionele zin dan ook. Wat er bestaat, is een cluster van traditionele stenen huizen \u2013 waarvan sommige de afgelopen decennia in beton zijn herbouwd \u2013 verspreid over een smalle strook valleibodem tussen de rivier en de steile helling erachter. De Ropojana-rivier stroomt langs de nederzetting, helder en koud, gevoed door smeltende sneeuw en bergbronnen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De gemeenschap is Albanees sprekend en overwegend moslim, wat een weerspiegeling is van de historische demografie van het Gusinje-gebied. Het leven in Vuthaj volgt het ritme van het pastoralisme in de hooglanden: runderen en schapen, hooien in de zomer, houtvuren in de winter. De mensen die passerende wandelaars begroeten, zijn gewend aan reizigers, maar zijn door hen niet in een toeristische sector veranderd. Gastvrijheid is hier oprecht en onstuitbaar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wat een bezoeker daadwerkelijk ziet: een bergweg die door een vallei loopt, boerderijen die daar vandaan liggen, de rivier beneden, aan beide kanten steil oprijzend bos en pieken in alle richtingen. Eind juni worden de weilanden gemaaid voor hooi en de geur verspreidt zich door de hele vallei. De Ropojana-rivier heeft millennia lang een kloof door de kalksteen van de Vervloekte Bergen uitgehouwen, waardoor steile wanden zijn ontstaan \u200b\u200bdie op sommige plaatsen honderden meters boven de rivier uitsteken. Het water is in de zomer turkoois en de stilte in de kloof is de specifieke stilte op plaatsen waar mensen zelden komen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De bovenste Ropojana \u2013 te voet bereikbaar vanuit Vuthaj \u2013 komt uit op bergweiden en hoge bergkammen die de grens met Albani\u00eb vormen. Dit is het terrein van de Accursed Mountains op zijn ruwst: geen gemarkeerd pad voorbij een bepaald punt, geen faciliteiten, geen betrouwbare kaarten onder het niveau van de bergkam. Ervaren bergwandelaars kunnen de hoge grond bereiken; informele dagwandelaars kunnen de valleibodem enkele uren volgen en de volledige schaal van het landschap voelen zonder de technische problemen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-ali-pasha-springs\">De Ali Pasha-bronnen<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>De Ali Pasha-bronnen (<em>Ali-pa\u0161ini izvori<\/em>), gelegen nabij Gusinje, ongeveer 8 km van Vuthaj, behoren tot de meest opmerkelijke natuurlijke kenmerken van de hele route. Meerdere grote bronnen ontspringen gelijktijdig uit kalkstenen aquifers aan de voet van een bergwand, waardoor uit het niets een rivier ontstaat. Het pad is volledig open, de Ropojana-vallei is het meest toegankelijk en er is betrouwbare pensionaccommodatie beschikbaar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Juni<\/strong> brengt wilde bloemen naar de weilanden en een sterke rivierstroom door smeltende sneeuw. De vallei is op zijn groenst en het licht is uitstekend voor fotografie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Juli-augustus<\/strong> Het is hoogseizoen op de Peaks of the Balkans-route. Vuthaj is rustiger dan Theth of Valbona, maar vooraf reserveren voor accommodatie is nog steeds aan te raden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>September<\/strong> is de beste maand: stabiel weer, legere paden en de eerste hints van herfstkleuren in het bos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Oktober<\/strong> brengt koude nachten en de mogelijkheid van vroege sneeuw op de hoge passen met zich mee. Sommige pensions beginnen te sluiten. De vallei zelf blijft toegankelijk en mooi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Winter<\/strong> wordt niet aanbevolen om te wandelen. Een groeiend aantal familiebedrijven <em>bujtina<\/em> zijn verspreid over het dorp en tijdens het zomerseizoen kunnen ze snel vol raken; vooraf reserveren wordt aanbevolen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De meeste verblijven zijn uitsluitend contant beschikbaar en zijn inclusief volpension. De prijzen blijven doorgaans laag naar Europese normen <strong>\u20ac 35-50 per persoon per nacht inclusief maaltijden<\/strong>. Vuthaj ziet niet dezelfde vraag als Theth of Valbona, maar vooruit boeken in juni, juli, augustus en september is nog steeds aan te raden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Omdat de accommodatie verspreid is over het dorp en niet geconcentreerd is in \u00e9\u00e9n gebied, moet u letten op waar uw pension precies ligt ten opzichte van uw wandelroute. De juiste keuze kan u onnodig extra wandelen aan het begin of einde van uw dag besparen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kamperen is mogelijk in de bredere Ropojana-vallei. Plav en Gusinje bieden ook een scala aan accommodatiemogelijkheden en zijn gemakkelijk toegankelijke alternatieven als Vuthaj vol is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-albanian-community-of-vuthaj\">De Albanese gemeenschap van Vuthaj<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>De aanwezigheid van een Albaneessprekende gemeenschap in deze hoek van Montenegro is niet toevallig. Het weerspiegelt eeuwenlange nederzettingen in de Vervloekte Bergen die dateren van v\u00f3\u00f3r de moderne nationale grenzen. Het gebied rond Gusinje en Plav is van oudsher de thuisbasis van Albaneessprekende moslimgemeenschappen die onder verschillende regeringen hebben geleefd: Ottomaans, Montenegrijns, Joegoslavisch en weer Montenegrijns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2014 werd Gusinje erkend als een aparte gemeente \u2013 een besluit dat de eigen identiteit van de Albanese gemeenschap daar erkende en haar een grotere lokale autonomie gaf. Vuthaj bevindt zich, als onderdeel van de gemeente Gusinje, binnen deze bredere context van de Albanees-Montenegrijnse co-existentie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De <em>kanun<\/em> \u2013 het Albanese wetboek van gewoonterecht dat ook in de Albanese Alpen voorkomt \u2013 beheerste historisch gezien de sociale verhoudingen in gemeenschappen als Vuthaj naast het formele staatsrecht. De invloed ervan is verzwakt, maar de sporen van de logica ervan zijn nog steeds zichtbaar in de manier waarop gasten worden ontvangen, hoe geschillen worden afgehandeld en hoe het huishouden is georganiseerd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Een dorp dat administratief Montenegrijns is, cultureel Albanees, taalkundig verschillend van beide offici\u00eble talen, en twee keer in twee talen genoemd, is geen algemeen bergwaypoint.
