Quick answers to the most common questions about hiking the Peaks of the Balkans trail.

Ask the Peaks team
What is Peaks of the Balkans?

The 192 km hiking trail weaves through Albania, Kosovo, and Montenegro, linking mountain villages, lakes, and wild forested passes.

What is the best hiking season?

June to September offers the most stable weather and open mountain services. October and mid-May may work for experienced hikers.

How do I cross the border?

Permits arrive through Albanian, Montenegrin, and Kosovo police emails. You can also let our team handle the paperwork for your group crossings.

Is there a map available?

Printed maps are sold in Peje, Plav, and online. Digital GPX files and guidebooks are also available for self-guided hikers.

Do I need a professional guide?

Guides are optional but highly recommended for first-time trekkers. They boost safety, support border crossings, and enrich the adventure with local insight.

Where do you sleep during the trek?

We stay in traditional guest houses, mountain huts, and occasionally hotels. Rooms are shared with clean linens and meals are included.

Do I have to carry my own luggage?

No. Horsemen or porters transport belongings to the next village so you can hike with only daypacks.
