Milisevc – Babino Polje
Crossing from Kosovo to Montenegro
This panoramic stage is a carefully designed detour from the classic Peaks of the Balkans Trail, created to avoid less attractive sections and unnecessary vehicle transfers. Instead, itguides hikers through quieter, less-traversed paths of the Accursed Mountains in Kosovo, offering a more authentic and scenic mountain experience. The trail begins with a gentle 5.6 km walk westward through fragrant pine forests, leading to a peaceful meadow before reaching Plav Pond (1,960 m), a small alpine swamp where the route reconnects with the classic trail section between Liqenat and Babino Polje. From Plav Pond, the trail continues southwest for approximately 3.6 km toward Zavoj Pass (2,140 m).
This section is exceptionally panoramic, winding through conifer forests, alpine bushes, and open ridges. Along the way, the path crosses the Montenegro–Kosovo borderline several times before definitively entering Montenegro at Zavoj Pass. From the pass, the trail descends through breathtaking meadows filled with wildflowers and blueberry bushes.

After a short rocky stretch, it leads toward traditional wooden shepherd huts and joins a 4WD track through pine forest. Following this track past scattered mountain houses, you arrive in Babino Polje (1,500 m), a charming shepherd village offering welcoming guesthouses and delicious homemade cuisine. Babino Polje is a traditional Montenegrin mountain village, renowned for its fresh dairy products and authentic local dishes. The village lies just 13 km from Plav, easily accessible by car, making it a comfortable and rewarding stop after a scenic hiking day.
